The American Red Cross Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) course is a specialized training program designed for healthcare professionals involved in the care of critically ill or injured newborns and infants. This comprehensive course equips participants with the advanced skills and knowledge necessary to manage neonatal emergencies, including cardiac and respiratory arrest, and to provide optimal care during the critical first moments of life.

Course Overview:

Target Audience:
The NALS course is intended for healthcare providers, including but not limited to:

  • Paramedics

  • Registered Nurses (RN)

  • Nurse Practitioners (NP)

  • Physician Assistants (PA)

  • Physicians (MD/DO)

  • Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN)
    Participants must be actively involved in neonatal care or have experience in settings such as:

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU)

  • Labor & Delivery (L&D)

  • Pediatric Transport and EMS teams

  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with neonatal or infant care

Course Content:

  • Initial Assessment and Stabilization: Learn how to rapidly assess and stabilize a newborn in respiratory or cardiac distress, including the identification of life-threatening conditions.

  • Advanced Airway Management: Techniques for managing airway obstructions and providing ventilation, including the use of neonatal resuscitation equipment.

  • Cardiovascular Support: Advanced neonatal resuscitation, including recognition and treatment of neonatal cardiac arrest and the use of appropriate medications.

  • Fluid and Medication Administration: Proper dosage calculations, IV access, and administration of fluids and medications in the neonatal patient.

  • Team Dynamics and Communication: Effective communication and coordination with the neonatal resuscitation team during high-stress emergency situations.

  • Neonatal Transport Considerations: Key factors for stabilizing and safely transporting critically ill newborns to higher levels of care.
